Finally, enough rain to open the “fall-run door”. Water flow punched through the sandbar on lower Elk Creek and pods of fresh steelhead took advantage of the opening.
Fish and anglers catching them are at most holding-water locations north of Route 20. Once the flow stabilizes, anglers will get a better look at the size of this initial run of fish. The fall run is series of mini-surges of steelhead entering the tributaries. We have witnessed small groups of 5-15 fish rushing into Elk Creek in recent days. Now with the door wide-open and muddy water to provide cover, the number of steelhead running any tributary can only be estimated.
